BMW M1 Homage Production Version Rendering

There’s still no word whether BMW is actually considering developing a production model of its well received M1 Homage Concept that was unveiled at last month’s Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este classic car salon, but there’s no harm in showing you how a production M1 could look like.

Though not the best quality, this scan from German car magazine “Auto Zeitung”, features a rendering of a toned-down version of the M1 Concept with a set of M6 alloy wheels. Not bad but if BMW does decide to give the green light, we’d prefer it if the Germans stay as close as possible to the original concept.

Update: BMW M1 “Prototype” Photoshop Based on M3 E92

As we told you earlier today (see here), the BMW M1 Prototype that took the net by surprise was just a photoshop exercise. Thanks to a few Carscoop readers, we also know the source; a Spanish artist who goes by the nickname “H0SS” posted the chop on the “Forocoches” forum.

As you can see in the pictures we added, “H0SS” created the M1 Prototype by morphing a white BMW M3 E92 and adding among other things, a set of Alfa Romeo Brera headlights. Though we weren’t fooled by the chop, we’ll give our kudos to the young Spanish artist for an excellent job and we hope to see more projects from him in the near future.

Now, as for the site that aroused the “M1” story, we’re completely stunned by the fact that no one took the time to check out a few stories listed on the first page; that site copy-pastes articles from Carscoop, Autoblog.com, eGMcartech, Autocar, Cnet etc. All we have to say about this is that, where you find a story is of equal –if not more- importance as the story itself.

BMW M1 Prototype… Photoshop by “H0SS Forero”

For the past 24 hours the net is rumbling about this picture allegedly depicting a BMW M1 Prototype caught in an airplane hanger in somewhere in Spain. First of all, we’re 99.9% sure it’s a chop blending Audi R8, BMW M3 and God knows how many elements from other cars. A very good chop, but nevertheless, a chop.

And if that isn’t enough to convince you, the website called Freshtarmac that allegedly posted the story (we’re saying allegedly as the particular site hosts a series of copy-paste articles from various blogs -Carscoop, eGMcartech etc), says: “We don’t know any more details at this point other then it was created by H0SS Forero”. We’re not aware of anyone by that name in BMW, are you? If anyone knows more about the chop and its creator, feel free to drop us a line.

Nostalgia: 1970’s Videos of the BMW M1 Procar in Monaco and the Nurburgring

Last weekend’s presentation of the BMW M1 Homage Concept (see here) prompted us to perform a search on the original M1’s history and in particular, its racing heritage. Our hunt led us to the discovery of two, nostalgic late-1970’s videos of the M1 Procar racing version, one from the Procar Series in Monaco and another one with the M1 lapping the famous Nurburgring race track.

The peppy M1 Procar edition featured among other things, a modified version of the M88 6-cylinder unit with new camshafts, larger valves, forged pistons, optimized flow ducts, slides instead of throttle butterflies and a modified exhaust system boosting, all of which helped boost output to 470–490 Hp. Weighing in at a mere 1,020 kg or 2,248 lbs, the M1 Procar had a top speed of approximately 310 km/h (192 mph). –Video after the jump

Video: BMW’s Head Designer Shows us the M1 Homage Concept

After seeing all the pictures this past weekend (click here for the high-res image gallery), it was about time we saw footage of BMW’s M1 Concept that draws its inspiration from the Bavarian carmaker’s homonymous 1970’s supercar. In this first video (we’ll show you another one later on), BMW’s Designer Director, Adrian van Hooydonk “talks his way around” the M1 Homage Concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2008.

BMW M1 Concept: Updated Official High-Res Image Gallery

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the M1’s birthday (click here for pics of the original model), BMW surprised us with the unveiling of a mid-engine sportscar study at this weekend’s Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este (April 25-27, 2008). BMW’s homage to the M1 blends the edgy styling of the original model with modern design detailing like the rear-diffuser, the miniscule door mirrors and the absence of the visible door handles along with an extra-wide body. An interesting detail is the new grille which could find its way into production at some point.

In all, we like BMW’s re-interperation of the classic M1 a lot as it’s totally different than any other model in the Bavarian automaker’s line-up but at the same time, it’s clearly recognizable as a “BMW”. There are no pictures of the interior – to be honest, we don’t even know if the M1 Concept has one- and BMW’s sketchy German press release makes no reference to the car’s mechanical underpinnings.

The company’s execs refer to the M1 Concept as a pure study created to honor BMW’s past but, one never knows and if anything else, the Bavarian carmaker could do with a limited production version of this prototype as the ultimate -halo- driving machine. -20 High res images after the jump

BMW M1 Concept Revealed at 2008 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este!

Although BMW was planning to take the wraps off its spectacular M1 Concept tomorrow (April 27) at the first public day of the classic car show “Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este”, our fellow comrades at “Asphalte” managed to scoop the concept totally uncovered.

There’s no official information whatsoever on the concept and the only thing we are certain of is that BMW created this modern interpretation of its first and only mid-engine supercar to honor the M1’s 30th anniversary (click here for pics). Wouldn’t it be nice if BMW considered putting the M1 Concept into a limited series production using the M5/M6’s 507Hp V10 engine? Just a thought but who knows... –More pics after the jump

BMW M1 30th Anniversary

Thirty years ago, at the 1978 Paris Motor Show, BMW’s “M” Division presented its first ever creation and at the same time, the Bavarian carmaker’s first and last mid-engine supercar, the M1 (click for video). Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and developed in association with Lamborghin, the M1 was initially intended for the racetrack.

The road going edition was equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter straight 6 generating 277 PS that allowed it to reach a top speed of 260 km/h or 162 mph. Apart from being one of the most beautiful BMWs of all time, the M1 is one of the most exclusive as only 451 examples (others say 455) where built between 1978 and 1981.

BMW has planned several events throughout the year to celebrate the M1’s 30th birthday, including the creation of a special stand at this year’s Concorso d'Eleganza exhibition at Lake Como where it will show off production and racing versions of its iconic supercar. -Image gallery after the jump
